Third region processed: forest cover and forest species, mapped from ground truth. Species coverage is deliberately partial and documented, the north of the region is not covered yet.

Why this data

Free global products (Hansen, ESA WorldCover) never distinguish forest species. This species map is built from ground truth, more reliable than a classic zone-by-zone digitization. Training is restricted to pure stands, with a two-stage filter (climate domain, geographic distance to known zones) to prevent excessive extrapolation. Coverage is deliberately partial: only the area covered by this data is mapped by species, about 40% of the regional forest mask — the north of the region is not covered yet. Dieback and forest dynamics analysis is in progress.

Automated satellite detection (3 VIIRS satellites, about 6 passes a day over Morocco), not verified on the ground. A hotspot can be agricultural burning, an industrial heat source, or a forest fire: the satellite cannot tell them apart. 3-day window.

Third region processed. Species mapped from ground truth, training restricted to pure stands. Partial coverage: only part of the regional forest mask has a direct training sample, filtered by climate domain and geographic distance to known zones. Dieback and forest dynamics analysis in progress.

Basemap: Esri World Imagery satellite imagery. DEM: SRTM, 30 m resolution — major watersheds are extracted from this DEM. Relief and dams: Geoportail's own data. Administrative boundaries and regional division: official Morocco sources. Cities and population/household data: 2024 census (RGPH), Haut-Commissariat au Plan (HCP).
