Why this data
Free global products (Hansen, ESA WorldCover, ESA CCI Biomass) apply generic thresholds that underestimate forest cover by about 40% in sparse-canopy areas, and never distinguish species. These layers are calibrated specifically for this region from Sentinel-1/2 imagery and GEDI LIDAR data, with species-level discrimination (no global product offers this), and validated against independent sources: +4.3% difference from SIREDD (ANEF) for broadleaf cover, -2.7% difference from ESA CCI Biomass 2022 for biomass density. Full methodology documented, known limitations stated explicitly.
